Tis the season of trying new recipes.
I'm sure Pinterest is booming lately, with everybody being at home and looking for ways to entertain themselves. In our house specifically, we've given several new recipes a go. There have been new broccoli recipes, new ways to prepare asparagus, and a new chicken recipe lined up and ready to go. But by far the most impressive new thing I've tried since quarantine started is a brookie: a brownie baked into a cookie, prepared in a cake pan. The ultimate crossover dessert, if you will.
Admittedly, this isn't something we've come across strictly during quarantine. My sister had requested one for her birthday on March 13th (god, doesn't that feel like a lifetime ago?). Ironically, that was the same day shutdowns were announced in Manitoba. It made for an interesting birthday. Not only did life as we know it flip upside down, University Centre also went up in flames. For her, it will no doubt be a memorable 20th birthday.
But it was made infinitely sweeter by our aunt. At the request of my sister, a brookie was made (and paper birthday crown supplied), and we both agreed that it was indeed the ultimate dessert.
Cut to last week, when my sister helps clean that same aunt's car- the payment? Nothing other than a brookie. An excellent form of payment if you ask me, and no doubt one that will be enjoyed immensely.
In the midst of this coronavirus lockdown, trying new ways to prepare food may the best thing you can do. Either way, it's a win-win, and if that sounds strange, let me explain: either you end up with something you really like, or your oven will end up on fire, and that in and of itself is a memorable thing. And, it would be incredibly on par with the rest of 2020- how's that for metaphor?
