Well, it's official (more or less)- I have a new coronavirus side gig.
Starting next week, I'll be spending part of my weekends as a volunteer contact tracer with the regional health authority. I get my own headset. I'm very excited.
Canadians have been answering calls for volunteers left and right, and though it seems like we're going backwards lately (dammit), there's still some good left in the world. I'm excited to be able to contribute in some kind of way... plus I get a headset (yes, I'm weirdly excited about it).
I've also never worked in an office environment before (having worked previously in retail, and for the overwhelming majority of my employment history thus far, in labs), so it'll be a nice change of pace to work in a call centre, at a desk, with my own dedicated computer, while sitting for an entire shift. Yes, I'm aware this is the kind of work environment adults complain about. No, I'm not letting it deter me.
The ironic part is, normally I hate talking on phones- text messages and emails are just overwhelmingly easier. But hey, working in contact tracing/the wider public health world will undoubtably make for interesting stories down the road, once this pandemics all said and done... or so I hope.
Wish me luck!
