Today, we celebrated my father's birthday. It was nice, albeit slightly windy. But that also meant we were driving around, picking up desserts and dinner. And that was when I made one important observation: there's construction literally everywhere.
Like seriously: never ending waves of construction, orange pylons barricading roads at every twist and turn.
It's infuriating.
My sister and I ran into this issue the other day when running some errands. These long, snaking rows of cars, blocked turns, and increasing blood pressure. No wonder people working from home don't miss commuting.
There's a fine line to walk; a critical balance to strike. On the one hand, road repair is important. Infrastructure is (obviously) critical to any city. But: starting a million different construction projects without completing any of the preceding million is a surefire recipe for unnecessary blockages and commuter stress.
I don't know what the right answer is - obviously, I'm completely unqualified to comment on the principles or procedures associated with these types of projects. But I do know how frustrating it is to be trapped in a never-ending sea of orange signs that are seemingly present for months, while also hearing stories of other jurisdictions turning similarly sized (if not larger) projects around in a fraction of the time.
I guess it's true what they say, though: the four seasons in Winnipeg? Almost winter, winter, still winter, and construction!
