Helping hands | we're in this together

I mentioned the other day that in spite of the weird alternate dimension we've found ourselves in these days, there's still people out there who are helping people out, and not buying all the hand sanitizer.

I wanted to talk more about those people.

If you're anything like me and spending a lot of time online right now, you may have noticed this ratio: approximately 3-4 infuriating/disastrous headlines for every one good one. I largely credit these people behind the good headlines for keeping me sane these days. I have one Facebook friend in particular who posts daily updates basically telling us all that the sky is falling and we need to brace for imminent doom. Making the whole thing even more notable, all these posts are accompanied by graphs, as if that makes it all so much better (not!). It's complete hysteria. Yet people go crazy in the comments supporting her! Yes, things are scary but we need to pump the breaks here for a second. We're still pretty far away from this becoming The Walking Dead.

All this basically to say that it's easy to cause hysteria. But there's still people out there trying to steer us away from that. There's organizations in cities across the country- some old, some very newly formed- that are working to connect people with resources, whether it be groceries, activities for kids to do, or even just a friendly video chat.

It's important for everybody's sanity right now that we don't only focus on coronavirus. Yes, it's a big deal and something that obviously requires our attention and our action. But there's still some shining light here. Venture no further than the YouTube homepage and there's ample videos uploaded by people all over the planet with entertaining, distracting content.

So to those people working to put smiles on the faces of others, know that you're keeping us sane right now. Sure, there's some bad apples who only want to focus on the "disaster that is life" right now, but we could all use a smile. Set a goal to be that person making others happy- they'll appreciate it more than you think.
