We had some time today, and we so ventured over to Transcona - basically the eastern-most neighbourhood here in Winnipeg, and often known around town as "Trashcona" and the "home of the flamingo lawn ornaments".
Yes, largely built up around the CN rail line, Transcona has a reputation around Winnipeg, and it isn't necessarily always a flattering one.
Sure, we've been through there more times than I can count. And yes, there is a certain small town feel to the place (largely due to the existence of Transcona as its own city in the pre-Unicity Winnipeg days). But today we checked out a new spot: the Transcona Museum. And though it's tiny, it's jam-packed with moments of Transcona. The early days of not only the area, but of our favourite Prairie-city.
Though we're not all Transconites, odds are if you find yourself in that end of town, you're probably at least a Winnipegger, or a fan of our fair city. The museum itself is housed in an old bank, and the exterior architecture is photogenic enough it may just be worth the trip. You'll also get to drive by "Hi, Neighbour Sam" heading East on Regent, and c'mon, if a neighbourhood has it's own mascot, you know it's worth checking out.
There's more to do in Transcona than I ever gave it credit for, I'll admit that. Heck, they even have a combined shaved ice/bubble tea shop that I will admit, I'm a fan of.
So, there you have it: Transcona. Though it may not be the first place you think of, it may very well be worth the trip.
You also might see a plastic flamingo adorning somebody's yard, and hey, that's just the icing on the cake.
