As if 2020 wasn't full of enough surprises, another unexpected event came to pass in my household recently. Thankfully, it was a good one.
My sister, who had been taking intensive summer courses for the month of June, was unexpectedly granted a job interview with a Government department, thanks to the government-wide student jobs program. Interviewed on a Friday, offered a job on Monday, and she starts this Thursday. It was perfect timing, matching up perfectly with the end of her summer courses.
Sure, she (like so many others) had been receiving the federal government student benefit- but there's something to be said for making money via more legitimate means (i.e. actually working). Plus, it's like a weird point of pride, saying you were one the students fortunate enough to secure or maintain employment during a global pandemic. I've often discussed this with other students I work with- no doubt that'll be a nice line on a resume.
But as June has faded into July, not only have new jobs been attained, but a realization has hit me: specifically, just how fast this summer has been going by. Exams don't seem that long ago. I feel like I just started working full-time again. But here we are, a week into July already. Maybe I should be grateful, though, that 2020 is passing by seemingly quickly... this is a year I don't think any of us will miss.
All in all, it's been a good summer so far, despite some of the external disasters that are occurring (I'm looking at you, coronavirus). I graduated, was accepted to a B.Ed. program I'm really getting excited about, my sister is no longer a welfare bum (as we've enjoyed teasing her), and my role at work is expanding.
The sun is shining, the heatwave finally broke, life is good.
