pollock island

Nestled just a stone's throw from Winnipeg, in St. Norbert, stands Pollock Island - a (not so) hidden park that guides you to a spectacular view of the Red River Floodway control gate.

Formerly the site of a private residence, Pollock Island is now open to the public, giving residents of St. Norbert, Winnipeg, and surrounding areas the chance to see the confluence where the Red and La Salle rivers meet; in many ways, this is the original Forks.

When winter melts to spring, and ice flows turn to water, the level of the rivers rises (obviously). Due to the geographic layout of the property, both the Red and La Salle rivers rise up and cut off the main portion of the area, turning this expansive 16-acre property into an island (as the name suggests).

I've been there twice now, and not only does it appear to be a great place to get some nice shots of the river (as well as the nearby St. Norbert Parish), I've also seen more than a few groups fishing. Meaning, if you're looking for a space that isn't as busy as Lockport normally is, Pollock Island may indeed be a good bet.

Purchased from St. Norbert Parish in 1945 by the Pollock family, the property was donated to the City of Winnipeg by the family so a wider audience can enjoy the area. It's an easy hike, with amazing views - all in all, it's well worth the trip!
