shop local

The economy is down the toilet lately, to put it bluntly, and amongst the hardest hit are local businesses. Many of them may not make it through this- a saddening prospect. Though it's good to support local business even in the best of times (think: improving the local economy, giving a place more character, etc.), it's even more important now.

One article I stumbled upon earlier stressed the importance of supporting these businesses in this time of crisis. Large companies and corporations will get through this- the little shop down the street likely won't. They don't have the same reserves and ability to recover that mega-corporations do. There's efforts now to buy gift cards to local shops and restaurants, buy groceries from smaller local markets, and more, all in a bid to help keep these businesses open, and give them a fighting chance to get through this.

Reality is, everybody is doing their best to get through the situation at hand. We as consumers have the ability to impact the economy somewhat by choosing where we spend our money. Those dollars are best given to local businesses. Not only will they likely be even more appreciative of the support, they'll be there to give our communities a sense of local flair and pride once all this is done.
