springtime... snow?

The winter term is winding down, and it is now past Easter. Typically, these are all signs of spring.

Apparently, not where I live.

For a place with seemingly never-ending winters and frequent -40-degree temperatures, it’s usually a welcome relief when springtime rolls around, the snow melts, and the mood just seems to get a little brighter.

I think mother nature didn’t get the “springtime memo” this year.

How is it, that in late April, a typical day can go from sunshine in the morning, to flurries in the afternoon, then back to sunshine in the evening? It’s like living through all four seasons in the span of twenty-four hours. I’ve lost track of how many times snow has fallen in the last month, since the actual snow from winter melted. If I had to guess, though, I think the snow from earlier today puts us at... fourth winter?

Being from the Prairies, we seem to wear the fact that we live in an icebox like a badge of honour. And it probably is. Not many people could handle living in a city that has been colder than Antarctica (anybody else remember the polar vortex from last year?)- and we’re not just living in it, no- we actually leave our houses and drive our cars and do our jobs, while dealing with the cold. It’s a point of pride. It’s indicative of a certain Prairie spirit, one may say. But whatever you want to call it, it’s April. We’ve put up with months of winter and cold. We deserve a little warmth, don’t you think?
