This past week marked not one, but two, family birthdays.
This time last year, we were able to cautiously celebrate them. Outdoor, distanced, doing all the "right" pandemic things.
This year, things looked virtually as they did back in 2019.
Masks were (largely) cast by the wayside, as all the adults were double vaccinated, and well more than 2 weeks past the second dose. Hugs were given. Laughing happened. Nobody seemed scared to be close to one another.
Will there be another spike in the fall? Maybe - who knows. And if there is, we'll get through it just as we've gotten through everything else thus far. But in the meantime, I for one intend to take full advantage of the ability to gather. If this past 18 months have taught us anything, it's that nothing should be taken for granted, especially not time with loved ones.
