As a brand-new, first year teacher, I'm learning a lot of things.
One of those things is that this season we're in now - this end of October, into November period - is otherwise known in education circles as "the October slump".
If the mood among staff (especially us younger ones) and even the students is to be believed, we've officially hit that period in our building.
It's not that things are going bad, or anything like that. The mood, the vibe, around the building just feels definitively different. In other words, the adrenaline of a new year (and in my case, new school and new profession) has worn off. And while things are going well, we're all a little more tired. A little more ready for break. A little more excited when counting down the days to the next weekend.
And can you blame us? Our days are long, our kids (at times) defiant. It's a lot to adjust to (and don't even get me started on the gym thing. I have... mixed feelings on that, shall we say).
Basically, all this to say, that we're trucking along, minute by minute, day by day. I'm doing my best, learning what I can, and as I keep saying - nobody's cried, nobody's died.
So fingers crossed the next several weeks are productive and smooth. That they're days and weeks that allow us to grow, allow us to develop... and here's to hoping that winter break is upon us before we know it!
Only 2 months until Christmas Eve...
