We did it: we blew it.
For a glorious 13 days in July, there were no new coronavirus cases across the entire province. Now, we're averaging dozens a day in the capital region alone.
We really screwed up, clearly.
So much so, that starting Monday, things are getting severely restricted. But I still don't think it's enough.
Bars, restaurants, and other similar establishments are a large part of the reason we're in this mess right now. So, even when the orange status takes effect on Monday, these businesses can still stay open... seems completely nonsensical, right?
Quite frankly, we blew it back in March when things locked down after only 1 case. Sure, there were lots of unknowns. But people can't handle multiple lockdowns like that, over and over. We had one chance at it, and we played that card too early.
I remain optimistic that we can get the situation under better control. I mean, they did in the Prairie Mountain Health Region. But they also had lots of clusters connected to communal living. That's not the case in Winnipeg. It's time to come together as a city, mask up, and (try to) take this thing out.
This morning when I was driving home from my stint as a volunteer contact caller, we drove by the provincial legislative building, complete with massive anti-mask rally. Some people just don't get it, even 6 months in. "Life is short," they say, "hug your loved ones".
Hug them if you want, but stay the hell away from me.
