Yesterday, my coworkers presented me with a gift and sent me on my way. I bid them farewell at the end of a day that was completed with muffins, baked by one of the technologists to celebrate my last day of work after three years. I handed in my parking pass, and left the building (much like Elvis) for what I thought would be the last time.
Yeah, turns out we jumped the gun a bit prematurely there.
As I’m lying in bed, fully engrossed in Grey’s Anatomy earlier today, I get an email from my boss, telling me students were granted a two-week extension period, until the administrative powers within the government have a chance to decide which students are spared the chopping block. We’re an essential service, so there’s still some hope for summer employment.
Basically, what this amounts to is more cash for yours truly. Though it only works out to 10 hours a week for the next two weeks, it’s a sign that I am sufficiently “essential” as far as the government is concerned, which hopefully bodes well for my future as a civil servant.
Fingers crossed that I will be employed this summer after all. In the meantime, I’ll make sure to savor what may be my last few hours as a paid employee. But I do have one huge question... does this mean I have to give my gift back???
